What Is Stage 1 Remapping? Benefits & Costs Explained

7 min read · 2026-09-01

Stage 1 remapping is the single most popular performance upgrade we carry out at SuperTune Scotland. If you have ever wondered what a Stage 1 remap actually does, whether it is safe for a daily driver, and what it costs in Glasgow, this guide walks you through it in plain English.

What is a Stage 1 remap?

A Stage 1 remap is a software-only recalibration of your vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU). The key word is software-only: a true Stage 1 file is written to work on a completely standard vehicle with no hardware changes at all. No new exhaust, no bigger turbo, no uprated clutch — just a carefully rewritten calibration that unlocks performance the manufacturer left on the table.

Manufacturers detune engines from the factory for a host of reasons: emissions targets, warranty protection, fuel-economy homologation, and to differentiate between trim levels in the range. The same engine block and turbocharger often appear in several different power outputs across a model line-up. A Stage 1 remap safely recovers much of that held-back performance by adjusting the fuel maps, ignition timing, boost pressure (on turbocharged vehicles) and throttle response.

Because nothing mechanical changes, Stage 1 is the lowest-risk, highest-value tuning step there is. You keep your standard exhaust, standard intake and standard drivetrain, and the original map is always saved so the car can be returned to factory at any time.

The benefits of a Stage 1 remap

The headline benefit is power. On turbocharged petrol and diesel engines we typically see gains of 30–40% more BHP and a similar lift in torque, with the extra torque arriving right in the mid-range where you actually use it on the road. That means sharper throttle response, stronger in-gear acceleration and noticeably easier overtaking.

Torque is the real-world winner for most drivers. More low-down and mid-range torque means the car pulls in a higher gear, feels more relaxed at cruising speed and needs fewer downshifts on the motorway. Driven sensibly, that can even bring a small improvement in fuel economy — the extra torque lets you short-shift and hold higher gears for longer.

A Stage 1 remap also transforms the feel of a car. Throttle response becomes crisper, the engine feels more eager, and the whole driving experience becomes more engaging without any compromise to everyday usability. Read more about our performance file on the Red Map — Stage 1 remap Glasgow page.

How much does a Stage 1 remap cost in Glasgow?

Stage 1 remap prices in Glasgow vary by vehicle, because the work involved differs between a 1.0-litre petrol and a 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. We always give you a fixed price once we have confirmed your make, model and engine — there are no surprises on the day.

As a rough guide, a Stage 1 remap is one of the best value-for-money performance modifications you can buy. Per extra horsepower, nothing else comes close — an exhaust or intake upgrade costs more and delivers a fraction of the gain. Is a Stage 1 remap safe for my daily driver?

Yes — Stage 1 is written to stay safely within the limits of your engine, turbocharger and drivetrain. We do not push boost or fuel beyond what the standard hardware can reliably handle, and we always save a copy of your original map so the car can be returned to factory specification at any time.

The clutch and gearbox are the main things to be mindful of. A big torque increase can accelerate clutch wear on a high-mileage car, and on DSG or automatic gearboxes a gearbox remap is often recommended so the transmission can handle the extra load. We will always advise you honestly on this before any work is carried out.

Stage 1 vs Stage 2 — what is the difference?

Stage 1 is software-only and needs no hardware changes. Stage 2 builds on a Stage 1-style file but is written around supporting hardware — typically a decat or sports cat downpipe, an upgraded intake, and sometimes an uprated fuel pump. Stage 2 extracts more performance because the engine can breathe better, but it requires that hardware to be fitted first.

For the vast majority of Glasgow drivers, Stage 1 is the sweet spot — maximum gain for minimum outlay and zero hardware hassle. We will tell you straight if your goals genuinely warrant Stage 2.
