EGR Delete Explained: Performance & Emissions

The EGR valve recirculates a portion of the exhaust gas back into the intake manifold under certain driving conditions. Mixing inert exhaust gas with the fresh intake lowers combustion temperatures, which in turn reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The downside is that the recirculated exhaust gas is full of soot and oil vapour. Over time that soot coats the intake manifold, the EGR valve and the inlet ports, leading to a sticking valve, restricted airflow and a host of running problems.

A sticking or failed EGR valve typically shows up as an engine management light, rough idle, hesitation or stuttering, reduced power, increased smoke and recurring fault codes. Left alone, a badly sooted intake will choke the engine and hurt both performance and economy.

These symptoms are especially common on diesels doing short, stop-start journeys around Glasgow — exactly the conditions where the EGR is active most and the engine never gets hot enough to burn off the buildup.
