What makes a car good for remapping?
The best cars for remapping are turbocharged — petrol or diesel. A naturally aspirated engine has very little headroom because it is already breathing as well as it can, so gains are small. A turbocharged engine, on the other hand, is often detuned significantly from the factory, and a remap can safely raise boost and fuel to unlock a large chunk of held-back performance.
The other factor is the strength of the underlying engine and drivetrain. Engines that share a block with a more powerful variant in the range tend to be over-engineered for their stock output, which means they take a Stage 1 remap in their stride.
VAG 2.0 TDI and TFSI
The VAG group’s 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI engines are arguably the most remapped platforms in the world. From the Golf GTI to the Audi A4 and the Seat Leon Cupra, these engines respond brilliantly to a Stage 1 remap with big torque gains and excellent drivability. The TDI in particular is a favourite for our Green Map economy remap thanks to its strong low-down torque.
BMW 3.0d and 2.0d
BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six diesel (the 30d, 35d and 40d variants) is legendary for its remapping potential — a Stage 1 file can lift a 30d from 258 to over 300 BHP with a huge torque increase. The 2.0d is similarly rewarding and a popular choice for a Blue Map blended remap that balances power and economy.
Ford EcoBoost and TDCi
Ford’s 2.0 EcoBoost petrol and 2.0 TDCi diesel both take a remap very well. The EcoBoost in particular gains a noticeable lift in torque that transforms the feel of cars like the Focus ST. The TDCi is a strong candidate for economy tuning on vans and high-mileage diesels.
Mercedes CDI
Mercedes’ CDI diesels, especially the 2.1 and 3.0 V6, respond strongly to a remap and are common sights at our Glasgow workshop. Pairing a CDI remap with an EGR delete is a popular combination for cleaner, more responsive long-term running.
Vans and commercials
Don’t overlook vans. The VW Transporter, Ford Transit Custom and Mercedes Sprinter are all excellent remap candidates, and an economy file on a working van pays for itself remarkably quickly in saved fuel. See our Green Map page for more on economy tuning for vans and fleets.
