AdBlue is a urea-based fluid injected into the exhaust stream of Euro 6 diesel vehicles. Inside the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst, the AdBlue reacts with the exhaust gases to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

The system relies on a dosing pump, NOx sensors, a heated tank and a control module — any of which can fail. When something goes wrong, the car restricts performance and starts a countdown that eventually prevents the engine from starting at all until the system is fixed.
